The Baron of Brackley Doon Deeside cam Inveray a-whistlin' an' playin'
An' he cam by Brackley's yetts ere the day was dawin'
"Oh are ye there, Brackley, and are ye within?
Oor shairp swords are at yer yetts, an' we'll gaur your bluid spin" "Rise up, Betsy Gordon, an' gie me my gun
For though I gang oot, love, sure I'll never come in
Come kiss me, my Betsy, nor think I'm tae blame
For though I hae ae man, I'm sure they hae ten" When Brackley was mounted and rade on his horse
A bonnier baron ne'er rade o'er a course
Twa gallanter Gordons did never swords draw
But against three and thirty, fa's me, whit is twa? Wi' their dirks and their broadswords, they did him surroun'
And they killed bonny Brackley wi' mony's a woun'
Frae the heid o' the Dee tae the banks o' the Spey
The Gordons shall mourn him and ban Inveray Oh cam ye by Brackley's yetts, an' cam ye by here?
An' saw ye his lady a-rivin' her hair?
Oh an' I cam by Brackley's yetts an' I cam by here
An' I saw his fair lady, she wis makin' guid cheer She was rantin' an' dancin' an' singin' wi' joy
An' vowin' that verra nicht she would feast Inveray
Well, she's laughed wi' him, danced wi' him, welcomed him in
She was kind tae the murderer wha had slayed her guid man Through hedges an' ditches ye canna be sure
But through the woods at Glentor ye can slip in an hour
An' it's up spak the babe sittin' on his mither's knee
Sayin', "Afore I'm a man, it's avenged I'll be"

Blackwatch 02:52
Here’s Tae the Blackwatch Chorus:
Here's tae the black watch, the bold kilted lads
That's newly cam hame frae the war
We'll gie them a healthy cheer an' drink a bump o' beer
For the boys o' the gallant forty-twa Noo I am a sodger, my name, it's Willie Broon
An' I used tae be a weavin' lad an' lived in Maxwelltoon
But noo I am enlisted an' tae Perth I'm gane awa'
Tae join the gallant regiment, the gallant forty-twa (Chorus) The first time I went oot on drill wi' a lot o' raw recruits
The Sergeant Major chapped me for lookin' at my boots
He tapped me on the shoulder an' he said, "Jock, ye'll gang awa'
For ye're sure tae make an awfu' mess o' the gallant forty-twa" An' when the bugle sounded for dinner time
I wis first man at the table, I wis first man in the line
The Sergeant cam tae call the roll, an officer an a'
An' he pointed oot the billie o' the gallant forty-twa (Chorus) An' when I gang on furlough, tae Dundee I will gang
An' I will teach my comrades how tae fire a gun
I'll tak them in an' stand a drink an' then I'll start tae blaw
An' then they'll see I'm Corporal in the gallant forty-twa (Chorus) Oh gie them a healthy cheer an' drink a bump o' beer
For the boys o' the gallant forty-twa

Johnny Cope 04:24
Johnny Cope Cope sent a chaillenge frae Dunbar
Saying, "Charlie, meet me an' ye daur
An' I'll learn ye the airt o' war
If ye gang tae the coals in the morning" When Charlie viewed the letter upon
He drew his sword his scabbard from
Sayin', "Gang wi' me, my merry men
And we'll meet Johnny Cope in the morning" Chorus:
Hey, Johnny Cope, are ye a-waukin' yet?
Or are your drums a-beating yet?
Gin ye were waukin' I wad wait
Tae gang tae the coals in the morning When Johnny Cope, he heard o' this
He thocht it wadna be amiss
Tae hae a horse in readiness
Tae flee frae the coals in the morning Well, fie noo, Johnny, get up an' rin
The Heilan bagpipes mak' their din
Ye're best tae sleep in yer ain hale skin
It will be a bloody morning When Johnny Cope tae Dunbar cam
They speired him, "Whaur's a' yer men?"
"The de'il confound me gin I ken
I left them a' in the morning" Well, fie noo, Johnny, ye werena blate
Tae come wi' news o' yer ain defeat
And leave yer men in sic a strait
Sae early in the morning Oh faith, quo' Johnny, I got sic flegs
Frae their claymores and their philabegs
If I face them again, de'il brak my legs
I'll bid ye's a' good morning

about

Twenty years ago, in the spring of 2001, a newly formed band began recording their debut album. The band comprised four young friends who were drawn to making music together and shared an equal love of traditional song and instrumental music.

They named themselves Back of the Moon after a modern pipe tune they were arranging at the time by Archie Kenneth. The initial line up included the newly crowned (inaugural winner) of the Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year, Gillian Frame on vocals and fiddle, highly acclaimed piper Simon McKerrell and the multi talented Napier brothers, Hamish and Findlay on piano and guitar.

The four-piece band, plus equipment, somehow squeezed themselves into Simon’s tiny red Ford Fiesta “Noddy” and drove to near enough every folk club the length and breadth of the UK. The band won Best Folk Band at the Loriant Festival Interceltique, France (a trophy won previously by Capercaillie and De Dannan).

Simon left the band to pursue a career in academia. In this time the band made two albums, spent three great summers touring Canada and won Up and Coming Band at the Scots Trad Music Awards.

Simon left big shoes to fill, but the band soon bumped into a force to be reckoned with in the form of young virtuoso piper/multi-instrumentalist Ali Hutton. To anyone who knows Ali, it will come as no surprise that at this point the band shifted up a gear. With the help of some great agents, Back of the Moon started to tour extensively throughout Europe and the UK, appearing at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC and main stages at several major North American music festivals. They played live sets on national radio and were filmed by the BBC performing the songs by Robert Burns at a festival in Slovenia.

In 2005 they released their third album, Luminosity which was nominated as Album of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards and won Folk Band of the Year. They performed four times at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall - one highlight being their Celtic Connections 2007 show 'Back of the Moon and Friends’ with Simon McKerrell and others joining them as guests.

Back of the Moon came to the difficult decision to disband in 2007. The members are all still in touch and often collaborate on other projects. Now, for the first time, all three albums are available to buy on Bandcamp.
