The Sands o the Shore I aince had a sweetheart but noo I hae nane He stole awa ma hairt but I got it back again I got it back again and sae let it be For I care nae mair for him than the waves o the sea CHORUS: The sands o the shore and the waves o the sea When his back is turned he’s a stranger tae me He’s a stranger tae me aye and sae let it be For I care nae mair for him than the waves o the sea He bocht fur me the praisent o a braw diamond ring He thocht it wid entice me tae gang awa wi him But I wasnae as foolish as he’s taen me tae be An’ I care nae mair for him than the waves o the sea He is the son o a high lord and king But I am just the dochter o a pair working-man So it he’s drink his wine an’ I’ll drink my tea And I care nae mair for him than the waves o the sea

The Rollin Hills O The Borders I've travelled far, I've wandered wide Seen the Hudson and the Clyde I've courted by Loch Lomand side But I dearly lou the borders Chorus: When I die, bury me low Where I can hear the bonnie Tweed flow A sweeter place I'll never know Than the rolling hills o' the borders Well, dae I hae mind the day Wae my lass I strolled by the Tay But a' its beauty fades away Amang the hills o' the borders There's a certain place o' mind Bonnie lassies there you'll find And men sae sturdy and yet sae kind Amang the hills o' the borders

Gin I Were A Baron's Heir Oh gin I were a baron's heir And could I braid wi' gems your hair And mak ye braw as ye are fair Lassie, wad ye lou me? And I could tak ye tae the toon And shaw ye braw sichts mony's an ane And busk ye wi' a silken goon Lassie, wad ye lou me? And wad ye be content tae prove In lowly life unfading love A heart that nocht on earth could move? Lassie, wad ye lou me? And ere the laverock wings the sky Sae, wad ye tae the forest hie And wark wi' me sae merrily? Lassie, wad ye lou me? And ere the braw moon glistens o'er Oor wee bit beild an' heathry moor Will ye no greet that we're sae poor? Lassie, wad ye lou me? And I hae nocht tae offer ye Nae gowd frae mine, nae pearl frae sea Nor am I come o' high degree Lassie, but I lou ye Oh gin I were a baron's heir And could I braid wi' gems your hair And mak ye braw as ye are fair Lassie, wad ye lou me? And I hae nocht tae offer ye Nae gowd frae mine, nae pearl frae sea Nor am I come o' high degree Lassie, but I lou ye Lassie, but I lou ye Lassie, but I lou ye

Greenland Whale Fisheries "Greenland is a hell of a place It’s a place that’s seldom green Where there’s ice and snow, and the Whale fishes blow And the daylight’s seldom seen brave boys And the daylight’s seldom seen" " In eighteen hundred seen and sixty three On June the 14th day Our gallant ship her anchor weighed And for Greenland sailed away brave boys For Greenland sailed away " "Our Captain he stood on the quarter deck With a spy glass in his hand There’s a whale, there’s a whale, there’s a bloody great whale And she blows on every span brave boys And she blows on every span " "We hit that whale and the line paid out But she made a flunder with her tail And the boat capsized and ten men were drowned And we ne’er did catch that whale brave boys And we ne’er did catch that whale " "The loosing of those ten brave men It grieves my heart full sore But the loosing of that bloody great whale It grieves me ten times more brave boys It grieves me ten times… " "When the ship is moored and safe secured And all tied up on shore We’ll all raise a glass take a bonny willing lass And make this ale hoose roar Brave boys And Make this ale hoose roar " "Greenland is a hell of a place It’s a place that’s seldom green Where there’s ice and snow, and the Whale fishes blow And the daylight’s seldom seen brave boys And the daylight’s seldom seen"

about

Twenty years ago, in the spring of 2001, a newly formed band began recording their debut album. The band comprised four young friends who were drawn to making music together and shared an equal love of traditional song and instrumental music.

They named themselves Back of the Moon after a modern pipe tune they were arranging at the time by Archie Kenneth. The initial line up included the newly crowned (inaugural winner) of the Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year, Gillian Frame on vocals and fiddle, highly acclaimed piper Simon McKerrell and the multi talented Napier brothers, Hamish and Findlay on piano and guitar.

The four-piece band, plus equipment, somehow squeezed themselves into Simon’s tiny red Ford Fiesta “Noddy” and drove to near enough every folk club the length and breadth of the UK. The band won Best Folk Band at the Loriant Festival Interceltique, France (a trophy won previously by Capercaillie and De Dannan).

Simon left the band to pursue a career in academia. In this time the band made two albums, spent three great summers touring Canada and won Up and Coming Band at the Scots Trad Music Awards.

Simon left big shoes to fill, but the band soon bumped into a force to be reckoned with in the form of young virtuoso piper/multi-instrumentalist Ali Hutton. To anyone who knows Ali, it will come as no surprise that at this point the band shifted up a gear. With the help of some great agents, Back of the Moon started to tour extensively throughout Europe and the UK, appearing at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC and main stages at several major North American music festivals. They played live sets on national radio and were filmed by the BBC performing the songs by Robert Burns at a festival in Slovenia.

In 2005 they released their third album, Luminosity which was nominated as Album of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards and won Folk Band of the Year. They performed four times at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall - one highlight being their Celtic Connections 2007 show 'Back of the Moon and Friends’ with Simon McKerrell and others joining them as guests.

Back of the Moon came to the difficult decision to disband in 2007. The members are all still in touch and often collaborate on other projects. Now, for the first time, all three albums are available to buy on Bandcamp.
