Glenlogie 06:08
Glenlogie or Bonnie Jean o Bethelnie There were nine and nine nobles rade through Banchory Fair
And bonny Glenlogie was the flooer o' a' there
There were nine and nine nobles sat at the king's dine
And bonny Glenlogie was the flooer o' twice nine Doon cam Jeannie Gordon, she cam trippin' doon the stair
An' she's chosen Glenlogie oot o' a' that wis there
She ca'd on his footpage that ran by his side
Sayin', "Wha is this young man, and whaur dis he bide?" He's styllt Glenlogie when he is at hame
An' he's o' the noble Gordons, Lord John is his name
Glenlogie, Glenlogie, gin ye will prove kind
Oh my love is laid upon ye, noo I've tellt ye my mind Oh the Gordon turned lightly, as the Gordons does a'
I thank ye, Jeannie Gordon, but I'm promised awa' BREAK She ca'd on her maidens tae mak her a bed
Wi' ribbons and napkins tae tie up her head
Oh lay me doon gently, pit my face tae the wa'
Tak the rings frae my fingers, my jewels and a' But her faither's ain chaplin, bein' a man o' great skill
Weel, he's write a braid letter and indited it weel
Glenlogie, Glenlogie, gin ye are at hame
Oh this lady's love's laid on ye, must she die in her prime? BREAK When Glenlogie got the letter, he was amang men
And it's oot spake Glenlogie, "What's this young woman mean?
Go saddle me the black horse, go saddle me the broon
Bonnie Jeannie o' Bethelnie will be deid 'ere I win" Oh pale an' wan wis she as first he's gaed in
But reid and rosy grew she when she kent it wis him
Turn 'roon, Jeannie Gordon, turn tae yer richt side
For it's I'll be yer bridegroom, if ye'll be my bride Noo Jeannie's got marriet, an' her tochers doon told
Bonnie Jean o' Bethelnie, scarce sixteen years old
Bethelnie, Bethelnie, ye shine whar ye stand
May the heather bells 'roon ye shine ower this land Bethelnie, Bethelnie, ye shine whar ye stand

Nine Stone Rig They shot him dead at the nine stone rig beside the headless cross And they left him lying in his blood upon the moor and the moss They buried him at midnight and the dew fell cold and still And the women in grey for god to pray and the mist clung to the hill Oh gentle wind thats blowing south from where my love repairs Convey a kiss from his dear mouth and tell me how he fairs The word was carried back to me as if  by Gods command Your sweetheart was murdered yesterday by your brothers jealous hand No living man I’ll love again since my darling went through deaths door With one lock of his yellow hair I’ll chain my heart forever more Oh mother dear please make my bed and lay me down in sorrow My love he died for me last night I’ll die for him tomorrow They shot him dead at the nine stone rig beside the headless cross And they left him lying in his blood upon the moor and the moss They buried him at midnight and the dew fell cold and still And the women in grey for god to pray and the mist clung to the hill

SHIP IN A BOTTLE – Findlay Napier We sat in his living room staring at the fire And watched as the sparks leapt from the grate, and the flames rose higher It was hard for me to tell him it was time for me to leave He said, "I didn't go see the world, I thought that it would come to me" Pointing to the mantelpiece, he said, "Take that if you wish" A dirty whisky jar that contained a wooden ship "Your grandfather drained that bottle, and I put it to good use Now it ties me to my yesterdays, I'd be better off to lose" Chorus: No use fighting when the wind's against the tide Ship your oars, stow your sails, just enjoy the ride of your life Or throw yourself on the mercy of the sea Whatever you do, son, don't waste your time like me He built it back in '33, just a young boy at the time Back when the matchstick masts appeared to tower above the Clyde Leaving school, real ships he built carried men and goods afar To America and India, and in the '40s, to the war His country didn't want him as his mates fell through wartorn skies The rest, they joined the convoys, still he was too young to die Now he can't even find his glasses, his hands shake too much, he knows To break the bottle for himself and to let the memories go (Chorus) Sitting on the mantelpiece, the bottle's gathered dust While shipyards closed, their gates were locked, the chains begin to rust He was tied down to his memories, forever in their debt But I'll sail for clear blue waters and a life with no regrets

The Final Trawl (Arhcie Fisher arr Back of the Moon) Now it's three long years since we made her pay Sing haul away my laddie O And the owners say that she's had her day And sing haul away my laddie O So heave away for the final trawl Sing haul away my laddie O It's an easy pull for the catch is small And sing haul away my laddie O Then stow your gear, lads, and batten down Sing haul away my laddie O I'll tak the wheel an' I'll turn her 'round And sing haul away my laddie O We'll join the Venture and the Morning Star Sing haul away my laddie O Riding high and empty towards the bar And sing haul away my laddie O For I'd rather beach her on the Skerry rock Sing haul away my laddie O Than to see her torched in the breaker's dock And sing haul away my laddie O And when I die you can stow me down In her rusty hold where the breakers pound Haul away Haul away I'll make the haven of the Fiddler's Green Sing haul away my laddie O Where the grub is good, and the bunks are clean And sing haul away my laddie O For I've fished a lifetime, boy and man Sing haul away my laddie O And the final trawl scarcely makes a cran And sing haul away my laddie O

about

Twenty years ago, in the spring of 2001, a newly formed band began recording their debut album. The band comprised four young friends who were drawn to making music together and shared an equal love of traditional song and instrumental music.

They named themselves Back of the Moon after a modern pipe tune they were arranging at the time by Archie Kenneth. The initial line up included the newly crowned (inaugural winner) of the Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year, Gillian Frame on vocals and fiddle, highly acclaimed piper Simon McKerrell and the multi talented Napier brothers, Hamish and Findlay on piano and guitar.

The four-piece band, plus equipment, somehow squeezed themselves into Simon’s tiny red Ford Fiesta “Noddy” and drove to near enough every folk club the length and breadth of the UK. The band won Best Folk Band at the Loriant Festival Interceltique, France (a trophy won previously by Capercaillie and De Dannan).

Simon left the band to pursue a career in academia. In this time the band made two albums, spent three great summers touring Canada and won Up and Coming Band at the Scots Trad Music Awards.

Simon left big shoes to fill, but the band soon bumped into a force to be reckoned with in the form of young virtuoso piper/multi-instrumentalist Ali Hutton. To anyone who knows Ali, it will come as no surprise that at this point the band shifted up a gear. With the help of some great agents, Back of the Moon started to tour extensively throughout Europe and the UK, appearing at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC and main stages at several major North American music festivals. They played live sets on national radio and were filmed by the BBC performing the songs by Robert Burns at a festival in Slovenia.

In 2005 they released their third album, Luminosity which was nominated as Album of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards and won Folk Band of the Year. They performed four times at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall - one highlight being their Celtic Connections 2007 show 'Back of the Moon and Friends’ with Simon McKerrell and others joining them as guests.

Back of the Moon came to the difficult decision to disband in 2007. The members are all still in touch and often collaborate on other projects. Now, for the first time, all three albums are available to buy on Bandcamp.
